Sea Masking and Enhancements

Sea masking and Enhancement are very powerful tools to improve the understanding of live weather presentation for most people. These features apply to the image received from the spacecraft an underlay which identifies clearly the area covered by the picture by adding natural coloring to the layout. In this way ground will be coloured in green/brown, as well as see will be blue, and clouds will get a transparency peculiarity.

Underneath the “background” component on the right-hand navigation pane, there are several options available to customize the presentation of the background:

  • Dem
  • Sea Mask
  • Land-Sea
  • Blue Marble
  • Shaded Relief
  • Etopo Relief

Underneath the “composition” component on the right-hand navigation pane, there are many customizable options available which will apply image masking to the selected image- the activated image style will always be shown across the top of the selected image as seen below:

  • fognight
  • Airmass
  • Ash
  • Cloud High
  • Cloud Low
  • Convection
  • Day Microphysics
  • Dust
  • Dust Pink
  • HRV Clouds
  • HRV Fog
  • Natural
  • Natural Enhanced
  • Night Microphysics
  • Night Microphysics Cyan
  • Snow
  • Tropical Airmass
  • White

At any moment it is possible to return to the original enhancement by returning the “composition” selector to “Select Composition”.

To access the PDF Quick Guide explaining the elements of your chosen Composition, select the composition and click on the readout below, for example “Cold Ozone” under “Airmass”:

This will give you a popup which provides detailed information about the functionality of the presentation, what different colors within the presentation mean, and how to interpret the data clearly.

When applying Enhancement and Sea Mask, please consider that the process requires a slight reduction of image quality which add a minor degradation in pixel accuracy readout. In practice, this is reflected by a lesser accuracy in radiance-temperature and albedo readout; therefore when maximum precision is requested, it is necessary to read numeric values when Black/White or False Color enhancements are applied.
